That truly was my first thought when I finished the final page of Whisper of the Woods and sat for a moment with my thoughts whirling. I connected with D.G. several years ago during the very first Multicultural Children’s Book Day. From the start, Cry of the Sea intrigued me and once I settled in to read it, it hook from from beginning to end.

Libraries play an important role in everyone’s life. The library is a place where knowledge and the love of reading shine!  However, budgets for school programs are being cut, and school libraries have been heavily affected. Hours for library time have been shortened in some schools, and even non-existent in others.

Books are one of life’s greatest luxuries.  While some bemoan the reading requirement in school these days, it should be noted that reading was restricted to the very wealthy and privileged until fairly recently.  Since the invention of printing presses, but especially since the Industrial Revolution and mandate of elementary school education, literacy has increased dramatically.

Muslims worldwide fasts during this month to commemorate the first revelation of the Quran to prothet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At the end of month long fasts, Muslims celebrate the Eid holiday. Ramadan and Eid is a blessed time of year for observing Muslims worldwide. It’s a time to decorate and spend time with family.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day has joined forces with powerhouse multicultural children’s book publisher Wisdom Tales Press to create a much-needed initiative

Given the recent backlash and misconceptions in the media regarding Muslims and Islam, Multicultural Children’s Book Day will be focusing on the Muslim holiday of Ramadan June 5th-July 5th 2016 as a way to bring awareness and understanding about our Muslim neighbors via the pages of children’s literature.

30 Days of Ramadan: Understanding Our Friends is a celebration of children’s literature which includes characters and storylines that celebrate being Muslim. Books profiled will include topics like Muslims and the religion of Islam, books which specifically look at the Ramadan holiday and/or the authors that are Muslim.
