Pride Month | Resources

June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month! Since 1970, LGBTQ+ people have gathered together in June to march with Pride and demonstrate for equal rights. The month of June was chosen to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. It was a a series of events between police and LGBTQ+ protesters that lasted for over six days. The first Pride march was held on the one year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

Celebration of Pride Month include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and more. Many people come from around the world to participate! Memorials are also held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally (Library of Congress).

We hope to aid in encouraging all people to learn about the contributions and experiences of the LGBTQIA+ community! Below are some of our resources for children and families to utilize and explore!
