Michael Genhart, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist in private practice in San Francisco, CA. He lives with his family in Marin County. He is the author of numerous picture books – covering themes such as friendship, homelessness and compassion, microaggressions, LGBTQ+ families, and multicultural families.
Michael’s latest book is SPANISH IS THE LANGUAGE OF MY FAMILY (winner of the Tomás Rivera Mexican American Book Award) –To prepare for the school Spelling Bee en Español, a young Latine boy gets a much-needed boost from his cherished Abuela. During their lessons together, she shares stories from her childhood, when the rule at school was “English only.” On the day of the spelling bee, Manolo stands tall on stage thanks to Abuela’s support. In a starred review, Kirkus described this book as, “Tenderly tremendous. A measured reckoning with an oft-overlooked period in U.S. history, Genhart and Parra’s poignant collaboration explores the echoes of generational trauma and the power of societal change and hope.” Click here for activities tied to the book.
Michael’s other recent books include MAY YOUR LIFE BE DELICIOSA (which received a Pura Belpré Honor) – Abuela shows her nieta, Rosie, how to make a delicious tamale and along the way she shares what ingredients are important to make a delicious life and THEY’RE SO FLAMBOYANT – A flamboyance of flamingos flies into town looking very pink, proud and pretty. The other bird groups don’t know what to make of them. A story of judging others turns into an opportunity to look inward at one’s own biases.
His forthcoming book (June 2025) is EDIE FOR EQUALITY: EDIE WINDSOR STANDS UP FOR LOVE – the story of how one woman’s courage paved the way for same-sex marriage, changing US history forever.

Among the five books he’s authored is the social justice-inspired picture book Red and Green and Blue and White, called “Beautiful” by the New York Times in a review that said, “It’s a message the world can use, throughout the year.” His award-winning nonfiction for ages 11 and up No Way, They Were Gay? And Lee’s most recent YA novel A Different Kind of Brave received a starred review from Foreword Reviews, who called this gay teen love letter to James Bond movies “a gem for young adults: not just a high-octane thriller but also a queer romance full of heart and sensuality.”
