30 Days of Ramadan: Understanding Our Friends #30DaysRamadan

Multicultural Children’s Book Day has joined forces with powerhouse multicultural children’s book publisher Wisdom Tales Press to create a much-needed initiative

Given the recent backlash and misconceptions in the media regarding Muslims and Islam, Multicultural Children’s Book Day will be focusing on the Muslim holiday of Ramadan June 5th-July 5th 2016 as a way to bring awareness and understanding about our Muslim neighbors via the pages of children’s literature.

30 Days of Ramadan: Understanding Our Friends is a celebration of children’s literature which includes characters and storylines that celebrate being Muslim. Books profiled will include topics like Muslims and the religion of Islam, books which specifically look at the Ramadan holiday and/or the authors that are Muslim.

30 Days of Ramadan: Understanding Our Friends #30DaysRamadan

I wanted to make a list of Ramadan books to learn more about this holiday. Here’s what I learned after reading a dozen books:

  • Ramandan is the ninth month in the calendar used for Muslim holidays. When it is near, they watch for a new crescent moon. (Now I understand why many Ramadan books reference the moon in the title!)
  • The calendar for Muslim holidays follows the moon which means Ramadan starts on a different day every year, and can happen in any season. This year Ramadan falls during summer which is the most challenging season to fast during. The days are very long and hot.
  • Caring for the poor is important to Muslims which is one reason why they fast. Fasting helps them understand how people feel when they go hungry.
  • The festival of Girgian which comes in the middle of Ramadan reminds me of Halloween. Kids get dressed in traditional costumes and collect treats from their neighbors.
  • The new crescent moon marks the end of Ramadan and that day is called Eid al-Fitr. Muslims clean and decorate their homes and they have a big feast.

F. ISABEL CAMPOY is an author who crossed our path during our last MCCBD 2016 event. Her books are vibrant, sweet and clevel and we love the fact that many are in Spanish as well. We especially loved her book Maybe Something Beautiful.

Maybe Something Beautiful is the triumph of a community against the darker forces of social decay.  Mira, the protagonist, decides one day to paste her drawing of a sun on one of the dark walls of an alley on her way back from school, just to bring brightness to the smiles of her neighbors. The force of that sun’s attraction transformed those streets and the lives of their neighbors, forever.
