Alienum phaedrum torquatos nec eu, vis detraxit periculis ex, nihil expetendis in mei. Mei an pericula euripidis, hinc partem.

So many amazing parents, teachers, and librarians have been sharing their plans for MCBD, we just had to pass on this magic to our supporters.

This email from Tam Hixson truly made our eyes leak!

“Just a quick update to let you know what MCBD has inspired in Lake Oswego, Oregon….

Last month we had a Kids Bake Sale with a goal to raise $1000. With the support of several individuals, groups, businesses, and local newspaper, we exceeded our goal and raised $1200. We’ve partnered with the school district librarian and 100% of the proceeds purchased a dozen multicultural books for all of the elementary schools in our district.

So What is the Green Kids Club?

Green Kids Club is designed to teach young children the importance of environmental stewardship through picture books. The series was developed to teach children the importance of protecting habitats, to sustain ecosystems, animal and ultimately human life. Difficult environmental issues such as poaching, habitat, encroachment, etc. are part of our stories.

Sometimes, being a mommy doc is hard. Really hard. There are days when your heart breaks for a patient with a terminal diagnosis. And there are other days, when you feel like you are healing the world, but miss a PTA meeting or a basketball game for your kids. Making time for everything, some days feels impossible!

So, it was both flattering and concerning the first time my daughter, at age 3, said she wanted to be a doctor like her mommy. I want her to feel free to pursue any dream she desires, and want her to continue to want to heal the world, no matter how old she gets. I love that she looks up to me, regardless of how young she is. But I also want her to see that, while my work may take me away from her (and her brother) at times, they are always my main motivation. I want them to be comfortable to dream big but to always remember that I have tried to be there for them.

To that end, I wrote a book for my children (and especially my future doctor daughter)! I wrote it to capture this moment in time when she wanted to be like me. I also did it to show her, years from now, that while being a busy mommy doc may be hard, it is worth it because of her (and her brother). The book is an idealistic representation of what it is like to be her mother and a doctor, all at the same time. (excerpt from Dr. Bowe’s website)

Every year for MCBD we get the most amazing array of people and talents. I (Becky) truly love getting to know each and every one of our authors, publishers, and reviewers.

This year is just as exceptional with one extra unique stand-out; we have several Doctors who Write Diverse Books for Kids this year and that is just so admirable! Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to ask these docs what it was that inspired them to write their book. Enjoy!
