Pomelo Books was founded in 2012 by Sylvia Vardell, Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University, and poet Janet Wong, author of 30 books for children.
Teachers and librarians were clamoring for a quick and easy way to teach poetry, prompting Vardell and Wong to create The Poetry Friday Anthology with its popular “Take 5” mini-lessons for each poem. Today, The Poetry Friday Anthology series features poems by a “Who’s Who” of children’s poetry—with Jack Prelutsky, J. Multicultural Children’s Book Day is thankful for its CoHosts. Our CoHosts are a group of select powerhouse bloggers who share the same diversity in children’s literature passions and beliefs. They also assist in extending the reach and spreading the word of Multicultural Children’s Book Day. When I embarked on the journey four years ago to create a picture book about a little girl with magic hair who was also her best friend, I never realized where it would take me. I was inspired by playing with a loved one’s big poof of curly hair that sat on top of her head. I loved forming it into shapes and I would even make it talk. After quite a bit of cultural and academic research, “The Magic Poof “was born!
Picture Books are great, but I’ve always wanted my characters to come to life in a more animated form. I also wanted to take advantage of the access and interactive nature mobile devices.
