Welcome MCCBD Bronze Sponsor Pomelo Books!
We are so excited to announce that Pomelo Books is our very first Bronze Sponsor for MCCBd 2016!
Pomelo Books was founded in 2012 by Sylvia Vardell, Professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at Texas Woman’s University, and poet Janet Wong, author of 30 books for children.
Teachers and librarians were clamoring for a quick and easy way to teach poetry, prompting Vardell and Wong to create The Poetry Friday Anthology with its popular “Take 5” mini-lessons for each poem. Today, The Poetry Friday Anthology series features poems by a “Who’s Who” of children’s poetry—with Jack Prelutsky, J. Patrick Lewis, Nikki Grimes, Margarita Engle, Joyce Sidman, Alma Flor Ada, Marilyn Singer, Pat Mora, Joseph Bruchac, Linda Sue Park, and over 100 more—while the Take 5 method has transformed the way poetry is taught in thousands of K-8 classrooms throughout the world.
The Poetry Friday Anthology for Celebrations is a bilingual anthology (156 poems in English and 156 poems in Spanish) featuring holidays and celebrations from a wide variety of cultures. The Teacher/Librarian Edition provides “Take 5” mini-lessons for each poem, plus suggested picture book pairings; a fully-illustrated Children’s Edition is also available.
“The Poetry Friday Anthology for Celebrations will give you more language and content to share with children learning Spanish than any other purchase you can make.” —Spanish Playground
“A bubbly and educational bilingual poetry anthology for children.” —Kirkus
Janet Wong is a graduate of Yale Law School and former lawyer who switched careers and became a children’s poet. Her dramatic career change has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, CNN’s Paula Zahn Show, and Radical Sabbatical. She is the author of 30 books for children and teens on a wide variety of subjects, including writing and revision, dumpster diving, diversity, and chess.
Together, Vardell and Wong are the creative forces behind The Poetry Friday Anthology series, launched last year and already adopted by hundreds of school districts and used by thousands of teachers and librarians nationwide, and the PoetryTagTime e-book series, the first-ever electronic-only anthologies of original poetry for children.
Pomelo Books is Poetry PLUS! They publish The Poetry Friday Anthology series: accessible anthologies of original and diverse poems on a wide variety of subjects—sports, pets, families, holidays, science, technology, and (of course) poetry techniques. “Take 5” mini-lessons for each poem in their series make it easy to use these poems to teach the Common Core State Standards, Texas TEKS, Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), social studies standards, and more.
