Picture Books About Tolerance and Acceptance
1. Beegu by Alexis Deacon
One of my favorite books. The story is similar to “Elmer” but this one is about a tender young alien who arrives at Earth by accident. Everybody thinks that Beegu is weird and she feels alone. A terrific picture book that talks about “diversity” and acceptance of other realities. [picture book, ages 3 and up]
2. And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson
Based on a true story, a tender story in which two male penguins who desire a family create their own. Already a classic. [picture book, ages 2-5]
3. The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
I love the adventures of this little boy. According to Horn Book magazine, The Snowy Day was “the very first full-color picture book to feature a small black hero.” [picture book, ages 3 and up]
4. Same, Same But Different by Jenny Sue Kostecky-Shaw
A nice story about these two boys living oceans apart exchange letters and pictures to forge a friendship. Elliot lives in America and Kailash in India, but they have so many things in common. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
5. Last Stop on Market Street by Matt de la Peña
I love this Caldecott Honor book. When CJ rides the bus with his nana, he feels different and slightly envious of boys who have a car, or an I-Pod… Here we see urban life and thankfulness, with people of color as the main characters. A nice reflection about appreciating the things we have. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
6. That’s Not Normal by Mar Pavón
Named a European White Raven Selection. We have an elephant with a huge trunk – and the hippopotamus mocks him saying: “That’s not normal!”. But what does it mean to be normal? A tribute to the richness of diversity. [picture book, ages 3 and up]
7. Heather Has Two Mommies by Leslea Newman
A nice story introducing different families. Heather doesn’t have a dad, but instead two mommies — and she loves her family. Tender and necessary to understand diversity in our society, and good to teach equality to our kids. [picture book, ages 3-7]
8. Princess Li / La Princesa Li by Luis Amavisca (me!)
I wanted to tell this story about a different kind of princess. She is oriental but in love with an occidental girl. Her father, King Wan Tan, doesn’t approve of his daughter’s love because she’s not from their country. But that isn’t the entire reason: above all, his princess daughter is in love with a girl. Homosexuals have kids, nephews, brothers, sisters, friends and many families need a reference to tackle diversity. A bilingual book with both English and Spanish, it’s about equality and tolerance and learning, through an adventure full of magic, that the most important thing is love. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
