National Autism Acceptance Month, or World Autism Month, is celebrated every April! Along with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, this international observance is dedicated to highlight autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The month is an opportunity educate, celebrate the contributions of autistic individuals (or those on the autism spectrum) and advocate for greater understanding, and acceptance within society. The United Nations General Assembly established a day for ASD in 2007 because of the need for increased awareness and understanding of autism spectrum disorder. Autism affects millions of people worldwide, impacting social, communication, and behavioral skills in varying degrees.
As Jodi Murphy wrote in one of our blog posts, “we are in the midst of a paradigm shift when it comes to understanding and learning about autism. It’s happening thanks to the growing numbers of autistic and neurodiverse individuals who are finding their voices, telling the world about their firsthand experiences, and speaking out about.”
Below are some of these books and resources for children and families to learn more about ASD!
