Black History Month | Resources

February first marks the start of Black History Month, or National African American History Month, in the United States (and Canada)! It was preceded by Carter G. Woodson’s similar celebratory week established in 1926. Almost 50 years ago, President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month in 1976. Since then, February 1 – March 1 has been set as a time to celebrate the achievements made by African American citizens, their legacies, and contributions to U.S. history!
It honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today (National Geographic Kids: Black History Month). This year’s theme is “African Americans and Labor.” The theme intends to encourage reflections on Black people’s work, their workplaces, and events in Black history and culture through time and location.
We hope to aid in encouraging all people to learn about the contributions, cultures, and experiences of the Black and African American peoples! Below are some of our resources (book lists, blog posts, and Instagram livestream interviews with authors) for children and families to utilize and explore!
