Happy Valentine’s Day! Every year on February 14th, people around the world celebrate love. It is also called Saint Valentine’s Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine. This is because the origins of the holiday date back to the 3rd century in Rome where a priest named Valentine was imprisoned and eventually martyred. Saint Valentine of Rome ministered to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire and, according to legend, performed weddings and wrote love letters from jail! The holiday honors him but Valentine’s Day traditions have evolved a lot over the years and differ from country to country (National Geographic Kids: Valentine’s Day). In the U.S., the holiday is celebrated by giving each other cards, candy and gifts (like flowers)!
