Ramadan Mubarak! Observed by Muslims worldwide, Ramadan is a sacred month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Ramadan remembers the month the Islamic holy book, the Qur’an, was first revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next. It takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which falls between February 28th and March 29th this year. Because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon cycle, the dates change every year.
The month is a time to focus on their faith, the teachings of the Qur’an, and also perform generous acts (National Geographic Kids: Ramadan). During Ramadan many people fast, or refrain from eating and drinking, while it’s light outside. Their meal at sunrise is called Suhoor (“of the dawn”) and their meal after sunset is called Iftar (“break of the fast”). After sunset, many families meet for big meals that include food such as stew, rice, dates, and lentils. At the end of Ramadan, a three-day festival is held! It is called Eid ul-Fitr and Muslims see their family, give gifts and give thanks to their god, Allah (Fun Kids).
