Multicultural Travel Adventure Books
My Heart is a Compass by Deborah Marcero
A beautifully illustrated book for children 4-7 is about a young girl who wants to be a trailblazer. She heads on an imaginary adventure to find something for show and tell and learns that the journey is what is most special. [picture book, ages 4 and up]
Crime Travelers series by Paul Aertker
These action-packed books for middle grades build global awareness amidst suspense, action, and mystery. Author Paul Aertker writes, “This middle school series is set in international locales because travel has made me feel alive and given me an insatiable curiosity to learn.” Nothing like travel (or traveling through a book) to break down cultural barriers . . . [middle grade, ages 9 and up]
Geronimo Stilton: Mighty Mount Kilimanjaro by Geronimo Stilton
Since climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is still on my bucket list, I found this book to be a fun read. I like the Geronimo Stilton series for helping reluctant readers build their love of reading through graphic novels. They can learn a little bit more about Africa along the way too. [early chapter book, ages 6 and up]
Race the Wild by Kristin Earhart
For a wild ride and some international fun, check out this chapter book series for kids 7-10. Travel to the Himalayas, the Amazon, the Great Barrier Reef, the Arctic, and more. [early chapter book, ages 7 and up]
Journey on a Runaway Train by Gertrude Chandler Warner and Anthony VanArsdale
The Aldens have been recruited by a secret society to return lost artifacts and treasures to their rightful locations—all around the world! [early chapter book, ages 7 and up]
Scavenger Hunt Adventures by Catherine Aragon
More travel guide than fiction, these fun books will aid your next travel adventures with kids. We’ve tried the Mission Barcelona book, and it provided a great way to get my daughter excited about the upcoming trip, as well as gave us a fun checklist of things to learn about the history and culture. I even learned some new things! [picture book, ages 5 and up]
Everywhere, Wonder by Matthew Swanson
Start young! Build your children’s curiosity and imagination about the world with this picture book journey. Kids ages 3-6 will enjoy traveling to Egypt, Arizona, Kenya, Japan, and more. [picture book, ages 3 and up]

Lisa Travis has always dreamed of faraway places. Her childhood days of exploring old National Geographic magazines in her attic led her to the world beyond. She studied in Germany, traveled the USA in a Volkswagen camper, and lived and worked in South Korea. She currently finds ways to pack and go by designing global leadership programs. Her experiences around the world inspired her to write Pack-n-Go Girls stories that deliver positive messages around independence, adventure, and global awareness. Lisa lives, bikes, and skis in Colorado with her husband, two kids, and two dogs.
Janelle Diller has always had a passion for writing. As a young child, she wouldn’t leave home without a pad and pencil just in case her novel hit her and she had to scribble it down quickly. She eventually learned that good writing takes a lot more time and effort than this. Fortunately, she still loves to write. She’s especially lucky because she also loves to travel. She’s explored over 45 countries for work and play and can’t wait to land in the next new country. It doesn’t get any better than writing stories about traveling. Janelle brings her master’s in curriculum and instruction with a specialty in reading to all that she writes, including creating the teaching resources for her books. She and her husband live on a sailboat in Mexico in the winter and in a house in Colorado in the summer.
Adam Turner has been working as a freelance illustrator since 1987. He has illustrated coloring books, puzzle books, magazine articles, game packaging, and children’s books. He’s loved to draw ever since he picked up his first pencil as a toddler. Instead of doing the usual two-year-old thing of chewing on it or poking his eye out with it, he actually put it on paper and thus began the journey. Adam also loves to travel and has had some crazy adventures. He’s swum with crocodiles in the Zambezi, jumped out of a perfectly good airplane, and even fished for piranha in the Amazon. It’s a good thing drawing relaxes his nerves! Adam lives in Arizona with his wife and their daughter.
