Mental Health Awareness Month | Resources

May is Mental Health Awareness Month! It was first celebrated in 1949 and commemorated by the Mental Health America organization. Mental Health America has led the charge to promote mental wellness during Mental Health Month for the past 76 years. The foundation was founded by Clifford Whittingham Beers. Beers, who was born in 1876, and suffered from mental illness. Beers and his colleagues at the association wanted to find ways to make sure that mental health patients not only received the right care but also did not feel alone in their fight against mental diseases (National Today). This year, the organization hopes to turn awareness into powerful, positive action for lasting change! (Mental Health America)

While Mental Health Awareness Month is celebrated in the U.S., a more universal day is also celebrated by the WHO on October 10, and it is known as World Mental Health Day. This year, Mental Health Awareness Week, founded by the Mental Health Foundation, will take place from May 12-18, 2025. The theme for 2025 is ‘Community’!

According to the CDC, anxiety problems, behavior disorders, and depression are the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children in the U.S. It’s important to remember that diagnosed conditions do not tell the whole story about mental distress in children. We encourage health care providers, parents, educators, policy makers, and others to be informed about the prevalence of children’s mental health and mental health conditions so that we can support those who need it. Below are some of our resources about mental health and illness for children and families to utilize and explore!
