MCBD Supporters and Reviewers-Seattle Reading Partners
Reading Partners Seattle is a literacy nonprofit proud to serve four diverse public elementary schools across the city. We recruit community volunteers to tutor students who struggle in reading. Through Multicultural Children’s Book Day, we have been enormously gratified by the commitment of our volunteers and community to provide books that allow our students to see themselves in the stories they read.
Partnered with underserved schools, we know that the ability to read transforms lives and empowers children and communities to reach their full potential. Our trained, committed community volunteers work one-on-one with these students, delivering a proven curriculum each week that provides a child with the success and motivation for a true love of reading.
Several weeks ago, one of our amazing volunteers informed Reading Partners staff about the generous opportunities of Multicultural Children’s Book Day. Excited by the possibility of further expanding our Reading Centers’ multicultural book library, we quickly mobilized our volunteers to get involved in the initiative.
Within days, over 30 Reading Partners volunteers signed up to participate as MCBD reviewers, each contributing their book to our libraries. These volunteers, like everyone on the Reading Partners team, recognizes and understands the powerful impact multicultural books make for our diverse students.
Everyday in our Reading Centers, we see students’ faces light up when they connect with diverse characters who face common challenges and learn valuable lessons. Thanks to these characters and books, they never stop imagining new possibilities for themselves. We believe that every library can and should create these moments and sparks of inspiration for our students, and thank the Multicultural Children’s Book Day for helping us get there.
