Meet the Mermaids: Hi, I’m Jenny by Lois Petren

Jenny is an Asian mermaid and the most confident of the Five Enchanted Mermaids. The mermaids are a multiethnic group who live in the undersea land of Atargatis and use their super skills to help children with their social development. Jenny has lots of great ideas to share with children to help them raise their self-esteem. She offers tips children can try, such as ways to manage frustration, develop a practice of gratitude, learn new skills, and start a hobby.

The book is a dialog between Jenny and the reader where she addresses the young child, shares her own feelings, and then asks the child to respond. The adorable illustrations complement the text in a whimsical and relatable way for both child and adult. This book is ideal to lay the groundwork for a conversation between the child and adult about developing confidence. [picture book, ages 3 and up]

I Love My Hair! by Natasha Anastasia Tarpley, illustrated by E. B. Lewis

This book has been teaching self-love and self-acceptance for over 20 years. It is a great book for children of all colors and hair types to learn to appreciate their uniqueness. [picture book, ages 4 and up]

What I Like About Me!: A Book Celebrating Differences by Allia Zobel Nolan, illustrated by Miki Sakamoto

This book’s illustrations highlight various kinds of diversity – a multicultural world where differences are accepted and celebrated. It’s easy for children to see others like themselves in its illustrations and, with the mirror page at the end, they can even find themselves! [picture book, ages 3and up]

I Choose to Try Again by Elizabeth Estrada

This engaging rhyming book highlights the role of perseverance in self-esteem. Its colorful illustrations and multicultural group of characters help to deliver that message. [picture book, ages 1 and up]

Tales of the Five Enchanted Mermaids: You Can Do It! by Lois Petren

Otto is a very smart octopus, but he gets frustrated when he tries to learn something new.  The Five Enchanted Mermaids can help! We All Belong: A Children’s Book About Diversity, Race, and Empathy by Nathalie and Alex Goss

Using diverse characters and rhyme, this book teaches confidence through its message of inclusion and acceptance. Presented in a classroom setting with multicultural and relatable characters, it is easy for children to find themselves in the illustrations. [picture book, ages 1 and up]

Lois Petren, author of the Five Enchanted Mermaids and Lulu and Lainey series of children’s picture books, became an author in 2016 when a lost ball of yarn became the inspiration for her first book, “Lulu and Lainey … a French Yarn.”  Five additional books followed.

Since 2018, in collaboration with LifeMadeSimple, LLC, Lois has authored a series of books about the Five Enchanted Mermaids, a multiethnic group of mermaids who promote diversity and help children with their social development.
