Change the World with Empathy!

What Is Empathy?

Empathy is the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and see the world through their eyes. It is withholding judgment and allowing people to be their authentic selves. This is the opposite of “othering” people that seem different from yourself.

Why Is Empathy Important?

When children learn about other cultures and ways of life in respectful ways, they gain empathy, helping experience the world from a different point of view. That understanding disrupts stereotypes, judgment, and bullying, all of which are based on a failure or outright refusal to understand how someone else is feeling or how they see the world.

How Can Empathy Change the World?

Empathy helps children build bridges across social divides, by helping them find common ground with people that might at first seem very different. By suspending judgment, we are able to really listen, helping us to gain understanding of other points of view. Empathy will help our children be leaders, by finding points of unity, building alliances, and working toward solutions that benefit everyone. With guidance, our children can change the world with empathy!

Teach Empathy with Diverse Books

Reading is one of the best ways to build empathy. Books are a safe space to learn about other ways of life and imagine the world through someone else’s eyes. Children become invested in characters that may at first seem different from them, rooting for them in the stories they read and feeling a part of their families and way of life. This empathy helps inoculate them against stereotypes and snap judgments, allowing space for real understanding and friendship.

With exposure comes understanding, with understanding comes empathy, and with empathy comes the ability to find common ground and forge ties across social divides.
