Shanah tovah – or happy new year! Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and this year the festival begins on the evening of Wednesday, October 2, and ends at sundown on Friday, October 4. The holiday denotes the start of the Days of Repentance, which are the 10 days from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur. These days are used for self reflection on the mistakes of the past year.
Yom Kippur (or the Day of Atonement) is celebrated from sunset on Friday, October 11, 2024 until the nightfall of Saturday, October 12, 2024. The day includes a 25-hour fast from all food and drink as they pray and petition God to forgive their sins.
The High Holidays are both celebratory and solemn, with Jewish people participating in religious services and holiday meals. Other Jewish holidays celebrated this October include:
Sukkot: Beginning sunset on Wednesday, October 16, 2024. Ending nightfall of Wednesday, October 23, 2024.
Shemini Atzeret & Simchat Torah: Beginning sunset on Wednesday, October 23, 2024. Ending nightfall of Friday, October 25, 2024
