Multicultural Booklist

Candlewick Press is one of the fastest-growing children’s book publishers in the United States. Established in 1991, they are a progressive and creative company, with a steadfast commitment to the best, which is due in part to their rare independence--being 100 percent employee-owned gives them the freedom to publish only the books they believe in. This...

Multicultural Children’s Book Day (MCBD) is a non-profit co-founded by fellow moms Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen who has a vision of helping kids “see themselves” on the pages of the books they read. This event has evolved into something so incredibly wonderful and positive: far more than all of us could have ever imagined.

As we approach our fifth MCBD, I am excited to report that we have so many amazing things planned for our 2018 online event (1/27/18). , This holiday is usually just a one day event, but because since the day of this children’s book-related holiday lands on a Saturday, we decided to get creative on how we can make this one-day event a week-long party!

A huge part of what we do is work with authors and publishers to not only review and give publicity to their multicultural books, but to also spend hundreds of “women-hours” and thousands of dollars to get those books into the hands of young readers. Typically, the majority of our celebration exists online, but after seeing all of the amazing offline festivities that MCBD2017 inspired, we knew we wanted to do something extra special for our next event on 1/27/18.

On My Desk | New Diverse Kids’ Books to Consider

This is shaping up to be one of my favorite blog posts to write for our MCBD blog!

Last week I shared that, because of my role as Project Manager, I get to enjoy the motherlode of amazing multicultural books for kids that are donated to our project.  And as a result, I wanted to find a fun way to share those books with the loyal folks who show up here to read every week and support this non-profit. You all are amaze-balls 🙂

Carolyn from the Wise Owl Factory has not only been a strong supporter of MCBD since Day One,  we think she gets extra “cool points” for being a Minnesotan  like our Project Manager, Becky!

She is also a CoHost for MCBD2018!

Carolyn is also a source for amazing, fun and relatable printables that inspire young minds and support teachers in the classroom. Her site is also a treasure trove of useful and exciting Multicultural Printables that help to bring diverse kidlit books to life.

By now kids are back to school and teachers and librarians are beginning another year of sometimes one of the hardest jobs on earth.

Read Your World has always worked very hard to support teachers with free resources, free classroom kits, and free diverse books, but now we want to give YOU a way to help them as well! In 2017, we published its first-ever ebook filled with multicultural book resources and recommendations.
