My campus has many children who live with grandparents or grands who live with their kids and grands but I had trouble coming up with many middle grade books that reflect these relatively common scenarios. But in Lisa Greenwald’s Ellie’s Deli, the three generations live close to one another, support each other and are all working together to save the family deli. Love all these picture books that do represent intergenerational families.

That is such a great book. It not only has a strong Jewish female main character, there is Asian and LGBT rep as well with the best friend and her Mom.

What a brilliant list of intergenerational picture book titles! Another to add to that list is, Grandmother School, by Rina Singh, illustrated by Ellen Rooney, with the
themes of India, female literacy, intergenerational relationships, and the power of education.

Intergenerational stories help “interconnectivess” and help dissolve the stereotypes of each generation, as well as breaking down of cultural stereotypes.
