March has been set apart in the United States to celebrate women’s history month! According to the Library of Congress, Women’s History Month honors and celebrates the struggles and achievements of American women throughout the history of the United States. American women have fought throughout our history to gain rights not simply for themselves, but also for many other underrepresented and disenfranchised groups in America.
It all began with a “Women’s History Week” celebration in 1978. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country the following year. In February 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the Week of March 8th 1980 as National Women’s History Week (National Women’s History Museum). After being petitioned by the National Women’s History Project in 1987, Congress passed Public Law 100-9, designating March as “Women’s History Month”!
The theme for Women’s History Month this year (2025) is “Moving Forward Together! Women Educating & Inspiring Generations.” Below are some of our resources for children and families to learn more about some amazing women throughout history!
