Celebrating Easter | Resources

Happy Easter! Easter, sometimes called Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian holiday that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. Jesus was crucified on a Friday (Good Friday) and rose again three days later on Easter Sunday. The day is celebrated by Christians throughout the world as the most important and holiest holiday. They believe that Jesus is the son of God who came to earth to save humanity’s damaged relationship with God through his death and resurrection. It is also celebrated by many other people as a fun spring holiday!

Some traditions include going to church service/mass and participating in Easter egg hunts. In the first couple of centuries after Jesus’ life, festivals and holy days in the Christian church were celebrated alongside a pagan festival celebrating the coming of spring. Early Christian communities of Mesopotamia stained eggs red in memory of Jesus but the Easter Bunny is a gift-giving character that originated in Germany (Twinkl)!

This year Easter is on April 20th! Easter occurs after 40 days of Lent where some Christians fast, pray, and do works of penance. It’s celebrated on the Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21st every year. Below are some of our resources for children and families to learn more about Easter and Christianity!
