About our guest authors
James Bird
James Bird is a Gichi-Onigaming (Grand Portage band of Lake Superior Ojibwe) author and filmmaker. He has published four award winning middle grade novels (The Brave, The Second Chance of Benjamin Waterfalls, No Place Like Home, and Wolf Club) and has written and directed 5 films. He was born and raised in Los Angeles, California and now lives on the North shore of Boston, Massachusetts. When he’s not writing or filming on set, he spends most of his time with his NYTimes best selling author Wife Adriana Mather and their son, Wolf, where they are busy rescuing animals. They have 1 dog, 6 cats, two Ukrainian tortoise, 1 rehabilitated rat, and multiple wild turkeys.
Xelena González
Xelena González practices the healing arts through writing and movement. Her picture books include the award-winning titles All Around Us, Where Wonder Grows, and Remembering. A member of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation, Xelena grows her garden in Yanaguana/San Antonio, Texas, USA.
Sherri Maret
Sherri Maret was born and raised in Texas and her Choctaw family lived in Oklahoma. When writing The Cloud Artist, she set out to learn more about the history of the Choctaws and her ancestry. The Cloud Artist illustrator (Mersiha Lemmer) is also a Choctaw Nation member and they found out they were distant cousins! She was an educator for over twenty years with most of that time as a library media specialist. She now lives in the state of Washington. She always tries to have multicultural characters in her stories because children deserve to see themselves in books.
Carla J. S. Messinger
Carla J. S. Messinger, Turtle Clan Lenape, is a cultural educator and the director of Native American Heritage Programs. She is the author of When the Shadbush Blooms. She lives in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with her husband Allan and daughter Joy.
