Where are the models of relatable kids from diverse cultural backgrounds?

By Jeni Lee Chapman, Co-author of Gokul Village and the Magic Fountain and Co-Founder of Gokul Workshops LLC

The power of coming together with a shared mission produces truly amazing and impactful results. My co-founder, Bal Das and I planted this seed a little over a year ago and started this journey together. In September we published our first book and announced the launch of a new concept for children’s media called Big Bold Beautiful World Media. Our mission is to use creativity and innovation to build stories, products, and experiences that empower the social-emotional learning of global generations. As Maya Angelou beautifully wrote, “we are more alike my friends than we are unalike.”

Please welcome Megan Dowd Lambert with her list of Eight Picture Books with Diverse Family Constellations.

Because of my lived experience as a mother in a multiracial, adoptive, queer, blended family, I appreciate seeing representations of families in picture books that exist and thrive outside of a White, heteronormative, nuclear family structure. I like writing such stories, too! Real Sisters Pretend, illustrated by Nicole Tadgell, is an adoption story that was inspired by two of my daughters, and its characters include two moms, one who is Asian and one who is White, and their two adopted daughters, one who is Black and one who is a multiracial child of color. It was published by Tilbury House in 2016, and was named a Notable Social Studies Trade Books for Young People 2017. It’s also included on the Center for the Study of Multicultural Children’s Literature Best Books of 2016 list and the CCBC Choices 2017 list.

Every year for MCBD we get the most amazing array of people and talents. I (Becky) truly love getting to know each and every one of our authors, publishers, and reviewers.

This year is just as exceptional with one extra unique stand-out; we have several Doctors who Write Diverse Books for Kids this year and that is just so admirable! Out of sheer curiosity, I decided to ask these docs what it was that inspired them to write their book. Enjoy!

After experiencing two miscarriages, MCBD 2018 Author Sponsor Carlotta Penn started singing the words of a song she wrote a decade before when she learned she was pregnant for a third time. The song was called Rainbows, and detailed the magic and beauty of falling in love. When her daughter, Jember Dove, was born in 2016, Penn knew the song could be transformed into a children’s book dedicated to babies born after miscarriages.

Dream A Rainbow is Penn’s first children’s book aimed to inspire children to dream big and discover the world around them. The story features a young girl named Hana, who dreams of where a rainbow might take her on a stormy morning. The vibrantly-colored illustrations feature friends and animals that Hana meets on her adventure in Ethiopia.

“Daydreamers Press is the public vehicle for my personal passions,” she shared. “It is my contribution to a world where all people can see representative and inspiring reflections of themselves in books and communities.
