As a therapist, attorney, author, and mom, Deedee is passionate about passing down the life lessons that were instilled in her by her beloved mom. The story starts on the morning of the Eve of St. Nicholas. Elizabeth’s grandmother is sick, and her parents have to leave town to make sure she’s okay. So Elizabeth is spending the day and the night with Catherine.
Elizabeth’s parents have totally forgotten that it’s St. Nicholas Eve. In their family, St. Nicholas visits on St. Nicholas Eve and leaves gifts in the children’s shoes. In Catherine’s family, St. Nicholas visits on Christmas Eve. So, on top of being worried about her grandmother, Elizabeth is now worried that St. Nicholas won’t visit her. Raya Rahman is the founder and editor of a bilingual picture book company called Guba Publishing. She works in partnership with other authors, illustrators, and non-profit organizations to publish diverse and multicultural children’s stories and learning resources. Raya’s debut picture book is “The Unexpected Friend – A Rohingya Children’s Story”, a fictional story based on the real lives of Rohingya children living in refugee camps in Bangladesh that she wrote in collaboration with aid agency Save the Children. Raya lives in Oakland, California with her husband and their two daughters.
A portion of book sale profits is donated to Save the Children’s Rohingya Relief Fund.
Illustrator:
Inshra Russell, also known as Studio Inku, is a filmmaker, photographer, illustrator, graphic designer, and producer. With a fashion and advertising background, Inshra’s creative style is influenced by art, music, film, and cultures from around the world. Inshra is the author and illustrator of the children’s picture book “Tiny Jumps In” and the illustrator of “The Unexpected Friend – A Rohingya Children’s Story”. Dr. Melissa Munro Boyd is a Clinical Psychologist, mother of 3, and an officer in the United States Army. She is a proud graduate of Hampton University in Virginia where she earned her Bachelor’s in Psychology and La Salle University in Philadelphia where she obtained her Master’s and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. Born to a noble family in Mainz, Germany, Hildegard entered a Benedictine monastery and went on to become abbess of a thriving community near Bingen. From a young age, she received extraordinary “lights” or visions of Heaven, which she described in a book called Know the Ways (of God).
However, Hildegard made contributions in many other areas as well. Her collection of imaginative music and poetry includes seventy-seven songs for the liturgical year and a morality play, making her the most prolific composer of early music in Europe. Her pioneering scientific work formed the basis for the study of natural history in Germany, while her holistic medical studies helped to provide cures for numerous diseases. Hildegard was also the author of a cookbook recommending nutritional “foods of joy” and she even invented a new language! Such was Hildegard’s fame and influence that bishops, popes, and kings, as well as humble peasants, sought out her wise counsel.
Today, Hildegard of Bingen is recognized as a saint and doctor by the Catholic Church and is also revered by many Lutherans and other Protestants. Find out more about her life in this beautifully illustrated book by award-winning author, Demi.
