Nick Saint never really put a lot of thought into his name until one snowy day in December when he accidentally receives a letter meant for Saint Nick. Realizing there is not much time left until Christmas, Nick opens the letter. The unexpected message inside ultimately leads him on a journey of understanding poverty, gratitude, and service to others while discovering the real meaning of the holiday spirit.

PragmaticMom & Sumo Joe

In this sweet and funny story, Sumo Joe and his friends enjoy pretending to be sumo wrestlers. But when his little sister wants to join their boys-only game, what should Sumo Joe do?

On Saturday mornings, Sumo Joe is a gentle big brother to his little sister. But on Saturday afternoons, he and his friends are sumo wrestlers! They tie on makeshift mawashi belts, practice drills like teppo, and compete in their homemade dohyo ring. They even observe sumo’s ultimate rule: no girls allowed! But when Sumo Joe’s little sister wants to join in the fun, Sumo Joe is torn between the two things he’s best at: sumo, and being a big brother.

Fists, feet, and martial art forms collide in this sweet yet spirited rhyming story by author Mia Wenjen and illustrator Nat Iwata. Sumo Joe is available on Amazon or on Lee & Low Books’ website.

Candlewick Press

Candlewick Press is one of the fastest-growing children’s book publishers in the United States. Established in 1991, we are a progressive and creative company, with a steadfast commitment to the best, which is due in part to our rare independence–being 100 percent employee-owned gives us the freedom to publish only the books we believe in.
Our reputation for excellence in creating beautiful, high-quality children’s books is accomplished through a staff of dedicated, focused, and energetic individuals who enjoy an innovative, team-oriented work environment.

In 1992, Candlewick Press opened its doors as an independent children’s publisher, and we remain an independent publisher today. What does that mean? We are 100 percent owned and operated by our employees — who include our 85 staff members in Somerville and more than 155 authors and illustrators.

Candlewick Press arrived on the scene with some of the highest-quality picture books anywhere. And in the years since then, our offerings have grown to encompass all ages, from board books to e-books, high-end novelty to cutting-edge fiction. What hasn’t changed is our goal of excellence, our model of independence, and our commitment to the authors and illustrators who create our books and the readers who love them.

Their vast line-up of diverse books for all ages include notable titles like

Freedom Soup by Tami Charles

Every year, Haitians all over the world ring in the new year by eating a special soup, a tradition dating back to the Haitian Revolution. This year, Ti Gran is teaching Belle how to make the soup — Freedom Soup — just like she was taught when she was a little girl. Together, they dance and clap as they prepare the holiday feast, and Ti Gran tells Belle about the history of the soup, the history of Belle’s family, and the history of Haiti, where Belle’s family is from. In this celebration of cultural traditions passed from one generation to the next, Jacqueline Alcántara’s lush illustrations bring to life both Belle’s story and the story of the Haitian Revolution. Tami Charles’s lyrical text, as accessible as it is sensory, makes for a tale that readers will enjoy to the last drop. For ages 5-9.

A Wish in the Dark by Christina Soontornvat

All light in Chattana is created by one man — the Governor, who appeared after the Great Fire to bring peace and order to the city. For Pong, who was born in Namwon Prison, the magical lights represent freedom, and he dreams of the day he will be able to walk among them. But when Pong escapes from prison, he realizes that the world outside is no fairer than the one behind bars. The wealthy dine and dance under bright orb light, while the poor toil away in darkness. Worst of all, Pong’s prison tattoo marks him as a fugitive who can never be truly free.

Nok, the prison warden’s perfect daughter, is bent on tracking Pong down and restoring her family’s good name. But as Nok hunts Pong through the alleys and canals of Chattana, she uncovers secrets that make her question the truths she has always held dear. Set in a Thai-inspired fantasy world, Christina Soontornvat’s twist on Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables is a dazzling, fast-paced adventure that explores the difference between law and justice — and asks whether one child can shine a light in the dark. A boy on the run. A girl determined to find him. A compelling fantasy looks at issues of privilege, protest, and justice. For ages 8-12

Cerca/Close by Juan Felipe Herrera
illustrator: Blanca Gómez

Mi cuarto está cerca de la cocina. My bedroom is close to the kitchen.
As she walks from her kitchen through a daisy-filled yard to the house next door, a little girl notices things that are close to each other — just as the little boy she goes to visit is close to her. Some things are close — cerca. Others are far — lejos. With sweet simplicity, this charming dual-language board book and its companion volume, Lejos/Far, engage young children. For ages 2-5.

Lejos/Far by Juan Felipe Herrera
illustrator: Blanca Gómez

El árbol de limones está lejos de mi casa. The lemon tree is far from my house.

The little boy’s house is far from the city, and the city is far from the ocean. What about the mountains in the distance, or the clouds in the sky, or the sun that shines over the boy as he walks? Some things are close — cerca. Others are far — lejos. With sweet simplicity, this charming dual-language board book and its companion volume, Cerca/Close, engage young children. For ages 2-5.

My Grandma and Me by Mina Javaherbin
illustrator: Lindsey Yankey

In this big universe full of many moons, I have traveled and seen many wonders, but I have never loved anything or anyone the way I love my grandma. While Mina is growing up in Iran, the center of her world is her grandmother. Whether visiting friends next door, going to the mosque for midnight prayers during Ramadan, or taking an imaginary trip around the planets, Mina and her grandma are never far apart. At once deeply personal and utterly universal, Mina Javaherbin’s words make up a love letter of the rarest sort: the kind that shares a bit of its warmth with every reader. Soft, colorful, and full of intricate patterns, Lindsey Yankey’s illustrations feel like a personal invitation into the coziest home, and the adoration between Mina and her grandma is evident on every page. For ages 4-8.

Our Favorite Day by Joowon Oh

Thursdays are my favorite days.”

Mine, too.”

Every morning Papa follows his normal routine. He drinks his tea, waters his plants, tidies up, and takes the bus into town. Papa enjoys his daily tasks, but there’s one day each week that is extra special. That’s the day he might visit the craft store, get two orders of dumplings to go, and possibly pick some flowers he sees along the path. With its spare text and wonderfully warm watercolor and cut-paper illustrations just begging to be pored over, Joowon Oh’s tale of the singular love between a grandfather and granddaughter will nestle within the heart of every reader. Charmingly detailed illustrations help tell a touching tale of the bond between grandparent and grandchild in a quiet yet powerful debut. For ages 3-7.

Riding a Donkey Backwards by Sean Taylor
illustrator: Shirin Adl

Would you like to know how a thief can turn into a donkey? Whether a cow can climb a pole? Or why you should spoon yogurt into a lake? Mulla Nasruddin knows all the answers, and he might also tell you why he rides his donkey backwards. Whether in the guise of an Imam in a mosque or a beggar in the street, this trickster is never at a loss for a rejoinder, though it may leave you scratching your head, rolling your eyes, or laughing out loud. Enjoy twenty-one classic tales about a much-loved character from Muslim cultures in a book packed with jokes, riddles, and wisdom and paired with vibrant, theatrical illustrations.

Timeless wisdom is found in absurdity in these tales of an iconic Muslim character known as the sagest man in the village — and also its biggest fool.

Little Frida–A Story of Frida Kahlo, author/illustrator: Anthony Browne

Following a bout with polio at the age of six, Frida Kahlo’s life was marked by pain and loneliness. In real life, she walked with a limp, but in her dreams, she flew. One day her imagination took her on a journey to a girl in white who could dance without pain and hold her secrets, an indelible figure who would find her way into Frida’s art in years to come. Inspired by Frida Kahlo’s diary, Anthony Browne captures the essence of the artist’s early flights of fancy and depicts both Frida and her imaginary friend in vivid illustrations evoking Kahlo’s iconic style. A note at the end offers a brief biography of the artist who has intrigued art lovers the world over. For ages 4-6.

Barnes Brothers Books

Shawnta Barnes is the CEO of Barnes Brothers Books and her eight-year-old son, Jeremiah {Jerry}, is the author of My Family’s Trip to the Smoky Mountains. Jerry was the first member of Barnes Brothers Books to have a book published. His book My Family’s Great Smoky Mountains Adventure includes photographs taken by his mom, dad, brother James, and him.
“Last school year, both of my sons’ teachers stated they were struggling with writing,” Shawnta shared. “Being an educator, I started working with them at home, and I gave them writing prompts. One of those prompts was to write about our spring break from last year. My son’s response morphed into a published book.
“Being an educator, I thought about how I could help bring more diverse books to children around the world,” Shawnta shared. “Ghost Text by James Barnes is the other book released by Barnes Brothers Books in the last year and follows best friends Jared, Curtis, and Nick as they try to determine who or what is behind the mysterious text messages they received.”

Barnes Brothers Books is a publishing company with the mission of providing diverse books for all readers. This company was co-founded by Jermaine and Shawnta Barnes and named after their identical twin sons. TimTimTom Bilingual Personalized Books

TimTimTom Bilingual Personalized Books

For the third year running, TimTimTom – Bilingual, Personalized Books joins us again as a sponsor of MCBD. TimTimTom was started by two multilingual moms Gaby (Peruvian/German) and Kat (Belgian) because of their love of children’s books and languages.

The original idea for TimTimTom – Bilingual Personalised Books was to help other parents trying to raise bilingual kids no matter what combination of languages they had at home. However, as they were working on what was supposed to become their first story, The Football/Soccer Story, they noticed that many kids where not being represented in books and set their goal to change this. Every child should have the chance to become the hero of a story. This is how finally, it “only” took 15+ years, everything came together and TimTimTom was born.

TimTimTom – Bilingual Personalized Books, because reading in two languages is twice the fun! With three stories, 10 languages, and over 100 personalization possibilities to choose from, your child becomes the hero of any TimTimTom story, not only by name and appearance but also in the language(s) he/she speaks or is learning in school.

TimTimTom Books to watch for include Underwater Adventure , Football/Soccer Story, and Swan Lake!

Esther’s Gragger by Martha Seif Simpson. Illustrated by: Durga Yael Bernhard

Esther’s Gragger is a Jewish tale about bullying and is perfect for grades K-4. Young Esther is given a special gragger (a noisemaker) to celebrate the fun, and sometimes raucous, Jewish festival of Purim. An older boy bullies her to get it for himself, but Esther reacts with great courage and intelligence, her actions reflecting the biblical story on which Purim is based. The lively cast of characters quibble and carouse in a bygone world of warmth, surprise, and generosity. There is even a parade for children only. The appendix helps readers understand the history of Purim, how it is celebrated today, what a “gragger” is, and how to make a simple noisemaker. Following the award-winning The Dreidel that Wouldn’t Spin, author Martha Seif Simpson and illustrator D. Yael Bernhard have again created a new toyshop tale of playful language and images that hint at ancient roots and hidden meanings, which are just waiting for young readers to find. This is a tale ideal for reading aloud for fun, but also for learning.

Hildegard of Bingen by Demi

Hildegard of Bingen by Demi is an amazing historical woman credited with Science, Composing, Sainthood and more.  She was one of the most remarkable and influential women of her time. Blessed with an astonishing array of talents, she was at once a mystic, theologian, scientist, doctor, nutritionist, composer, writer, linguist, and artist.

Born to a noble family in Mainz, Germany, Hildegard entered a Benedictine monastery and went on to become abbess of a thriving community near Bingen. From a young age, she received extraordinary “lights” or visions of Heaven, which she described in a book called Know the Ways (of God).

However, Hildegard made contributions in many other areas as well. Her collection of imaginative music and poetry includes seventy-seven songs for the liturgical year and a morality play, making her the most prolific composer of early music in Europe. Her pioneering scientific work formed the basis for the study of natural history in Germany, while her holistic medical studies helped to provide cures for numerous diseases. Hildegard was also the author of a cookbook recommending nutritional “foods of joy” and she even invented a new language! Such was Hildegard’s fame and influence that bishops, popes, and kings, as well as humble peasants, sought out her wise counsel.

Today, Hildegard of Bingen is recognized as a saint and doctor by the Catholic Church and is also revered by many Lutherans and other Protestants. Find out more about her life in this beautifully illustrated book by award-winning author, Demi.

Charlesbridge

Charlesbridge publishes high-quality books for children, with the goal of creating lifelong readers and lifelong learners. Our books encourage reading and discovery in the classroom, library, and home. We believe that books for children should offer accurate information, promote a positive worldview, and embrace a child’s innate sense of wonder and fun. To this end, we continually strive to seek new voices, new visions, and new directions in children’s literature.

Charlesbridge is for their amazing diverse books that celebrate the world’s many cultures including books like Someone New; a companion to Anne Sibley O’Brien’s overwhelmingly received I’m New Here.

Follow Chester: A College Football Team Fights Racism and Makes History by Gloria Respress-Churchwell and illustrated by Laura Freeman is one of their stand-out books for 2019/2020. Based on a true story, the book tells the story of a very special athlete.

Chester Pierce broke racial barriers when, in 1947, he joined his Harvard football team to play against the University of Virginia. At that time, black people were not allowed to sit at lunch counters, they had to use separate entrances, and they weren’t allowed to play college football against white players.

Chester’s team didn’t care about those laws. Amid dropped jaws, jeering, and booing, Chester played and his teammates followed his lead.

Laura Freeman’s expressive illustrations create an atmosphere of bold moves and a tide of crimson togetherness that could not be stopped.
